Born in England Edwin Deakin immigrated to the U.S. as a young man, living for a time in Chicago then settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. Known primarily as a landscapist, his most enduring legacy lies in his series of paintings of California’s twenty-one missions, two suites in oil, one in watercolor. After Deakin’s death, the watercolors languished in storage for over thirty years before being unearthed and now the entire set is in the collection of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.

The building shown here served as the quarters for both the tanner and the majordomo or property manager at Mission Santa Barbara. A native of New York, Mary Fish arrived in Santa Barbara in 1875 and soon began studies with Henry Chapman Ford, the most prominent artist in the Santa Barbara area at that time. Primarily a landscapist Fish worked in a wide variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, ink, and crayon. Towards the end of her life she relocated to Los Angeles.

In addition to his painting, Poole was involved in various dance groups in the Santa Barbara area, most notably as a leader of the Poole-Verhelle Dance Group. This group performed for years at the annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta celebrations.

Beginning in the 1850s, Rockwell Cleveland worked for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a surveyor, topographer and cartographer. After the Civil War he was transferred to the western U.S. and worked from Alaska to California until 1892. Upon retirement he turned full-time to painting often using the drawings he had made during his federal service as subject matter for his watercolors and oils.

After the Civil War he was transferred to the western U.S. and worked from Alaska to California until 1892. The California missions were one of Ford’s favorite subjects. In addition to his oils, in 1883 he produced a portfolio of the missions – twenty-four etchings in all. During the course of his career Ford produced about eight etchings of Mission Santa Barbara alone.
