Russell Ruiz was a descendant of one of the original soldiers of the Spanish Royal Presidio at Santa Barbara and was an outstanding authority on the early history of our community. Over time he executed oils, watercolors, drawings, and models of historic sites based upon careful research to ensure historical accuracy. Mission Santa Barbara was a favorite subject. His work has appeared in numerous publications.

Carolyn Stanwood was a longtime Santa Barbara community activist. She was a founder of the local Red Cross chapter, helped organize the reception for the visit of the U.S. Navy’s Great White Fleet in 1908, and was instrumental in securing the present home of the Woman’s Club in Mission Canyon. Her second husband was Sam Stanwood, who served as a Santa Barbara County Supervisor for twenty-five years.

In 1909 Borg secured Phoebe Appleton Hearst, mother of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, as patroness. With her support he traveled to North Africa, Europe and, most importantly, the American Southwest. Once settled in Santa Barbara he taught for four years at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. In the 1930s he worked as an art director in Hollywood.

A native of Illinois, Nell Brooker Mayhew moved to Los Angeles in 1908 and became an instructor at the College of Fine Arts at USC. With influences that included French Impressionism, Japanese woodblock techniques and Symbolism, Brooker developed a unique color etching technique and produced a complete set of color etchings of the California missions.
