Evening Talk: Talk: Fremont, Foxen and the San Marcos Pass
December 4, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
By Neal Graffy
One hundred and seventy-three years ago this month, Lt. Col. John C. Frémont and his California Battalion arrived at Benjamin Foxen’s Santa Ynez rancho. According to legend, Foxen warned Fremont of an ambush by Californios at the Gaviota Pass and then guided the battalion around the trap by leading them safely over the rugged San Marcos Pass. Fremont “captured” Santa Barbara without firing a shot and less than three weeks later met Gen. Andres Pico and ended the Mexican-American war in California
Well, that’s according to legend. Our speaker, Neal Graffy will at last reveal the full story – Who was Fremont and why was he even here? Who was Foxen? Why Fremont didn’t take the Gaviota Pass and who was Fremont’s guide over the San Marcos Pass.
Plus! Meet the women who challenged Fremont and changed California history.
